Springwell Running Club - Press Release – November 24th 2019

This week saw Springwell runners in action on the road trail and cross country, as the purple vests took on distances from 5k to the marathon.

Malcolm Cup XC

On Saturday 23rd November the Malcolm Cup, hosted by Annadale Striders, took place in Sixmilewater Park in Ballyclare in very autumnal conditions. A very determined run from Luke Dinsmore saw him claim a podium place, as he finished third with a time of 21.45 with Ciaran Ferris 10th in 22.22.  The Junior Club Captain, Matthew Beveridge, although still only 15 years old stepped up to the challenge of the Open race and finished an impressive 46th in 25.06.  Alister Jamison was just a step behind in 47th in 25.08.

The Veterans Race saw another Springwell quartet in action with Alex Brennan 11th, 17.49, Philip Given 21st, 18.35, Gerry O’Doherty 47th, 19.59 and Jim Platt 203rd, 25.58.

In the Junior Races, Springwell had a very successful day as Eobha McAllister (U13), Poppy Given (U15) and Niamh McGarry (U17) all claimed silver medals in their respective races.

Northern Velocity 5k

Sunday 24th November saw cool, dry but overcast conditions great the runners for the Northern Velocity 5k Autumn Run in the Roe Valley Country Park.  The out and back course took the runners from the Dog Leap Centre along the west bank of the River Roe to the weir below Carrick Flats before retracing their steps to finish back at the Dog Leap.  Jason Scott ran 17.50 to finish second with Ryan Gray third in 19.00.  In her first race after injury Pauline Mullan finished 23rd with a time of 26.57.

In her first outing in a Springwell vest Ellie Colvin finished third girl in the children’s 3k race.

East Antrim Marathon Series

There’s hardly a week goes by when Helena Dornan isn’t running at least one marathon.  This week was no exception as Helena ran 4.16.21 in the trail marathon in Valley Park, Newtownabbey to finish first lady.
