Springwell Running Club - Press Release – December 1st

It’s been another busy week for Springwell RC with races in Malaysia, the announcement of selections for international events and the presentation of awards for coaching.

Malaysia

The Penang Bridge International Half Marathon on the 24th November attracted over 6200 competitors to the event and, to try and help everyone deal with the heat and humidity the race starts at 3.00am, when it’s only 26 Celsius with 90% humidity!  Despite the conditions America Aznar produced an excellent time of 1.36.49 to finish 49th overall, 8th lady and 2nd in her age category.

Staying in the far east, with heat and humidity still a factor, the Standard Chartered Singapore 10k took place on the 30th November with another trophy winning performance from America, as she ran 44.44 to finish 52nd overall, 2nd lady and 1st in her age category.  Simon Stewart ran an impressive 36.21 to finish 8th and win his age category.

Springwell RC had five representatives at the race with Luke Dinsmore leading the club home in 17th with an excellent time of 31,38.  Ciaran Ferris was 48th in 33.29 and Ryan Galway, with yet another personal best at this distance 104th in 35.25.  Alex Brennan was 176th in 37.35 and Stephen Joyce 196th with a time of 37.49.

Anglo Celtic Plate 100k

The Northern Ireland Ultra Running Association has named strong teams for next Spring’s 100K Home Countries international in Boddington, England and Springwell RC are delighted to have two of our members earning international vests.  Karla Borland and Helena Dornan will be representing Northern Ireland at the event which takes place on the 16th May 2020.

Community Coach of the Year

Springwell RC’s Alistair Bratten has been awarded the Athletics NI Community Coach of the year along with Trevor McGlynn from Omagh Harriers.  The success of Springwell RC’s Junior Section is due to Alistair’s commitment and the time and effort that he devotes to the Juniors.  The award is a well deserved reward for the many hours spent at coaching sessions and at the many events to which he travels with our young athletes.
