Weekly Race Report - 11th May 2025

It has been a quieter week on the racing front this week compared to the last couple of weeks, with only eight of our members in racing action across the mountain and road races during the week. The Hill and Dale mountain race series continued last Thursday evening, while Termoneeney Running Clubb hosted their annual 5k and 10k event on Fridy evening.

Termoneeney 10k

Termoneeney RC hosted the Termoneeney 5k & 10k on Friday evening past. Conditions were bright and warm as runners gathered at the Termoneeney Centre for the start of the race, which begins by runners making way towards Knockcloghrim. The undulating course then turns onto Rocktown Lane after going through Knockcloghrim, then Rocktown Road, before taking Gulladuff Road back into Gulladuff and the finish line, back where it all began at the Termoneeney Centre.

Springwell had four runners in the 10k race, with Maurice Walker the first of the four home in 7th place in a time of 0:38:17. Mark Gardiner had a Top 10 finish with a time of 0:39:00, followed by Rhys Walker in 0:41:07 and Paul Quinn in 0:45:01.

Leeds Half Marathon

Congratulations to Lorraine Abernethy who completed the Rob Burrow Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday morning in temperatures up as high as 23°C! This race starts near Headingley Stadium, home of the Leeds Rhinos, and takes the runners a couple of miles in towards the town centre before heading straight out of town for 5 miles, and back in along the same road to finish back at the stadium. The course is certainly not a flat one, with over 500 feet of elevation gain over the 13.1 miles.

Having run a parkrun local to Leeds yesterday morning, Lorraine went out and ran a fantastic 2:33:15 in the Half Marathon!

Hill & Dale: Hen & Cock

It's the halfway point in this year's Hill and Dale series, and last week it was a new race from last year – Hen and Cock. A short and sweet mountain race, short being 2.3mile in distance, and sweet being 1,600 feet of elevation.

A perfect night for mountain racing under the sun, competitors visited Hen mountain, Cock mountain, and for good measure Hen mountain again. First back for the club was Peter Tees who finished 38th in 37:30. Fergus Thompson was next back finishing 101st in 44:05, and thirdly we had Adele Tomb who finished 157th 48:51.

Parkrun

Springwell had 63 runners at 17 different parkruns last weekend, with the congestion in Portrush due to the NW200 seemingly encouraging some to travel further afield for their Saturday morning endorphin hit! In terms of parkrun tourism, Lorraine Abernethy was at Armley near Leeds, Iris Wilson was in Morde – South London, and Bernie Hannignaa got her fix in Galway. Leanne Quigley hit the very significant milestone of 250 parkruns at Limavady parkrun.
