Springwell Running Club - Press Release – January 5th

Mountains, marathons and forests were the settings for the start of 2020 as Springwell RC members took part in the Race Over the Glen, the East Antrim Marathon Series and the Born 2 Run “Run Forest Run” 10k in Tollymore forest park.

Race Over the Glen

For many local runners the Race Over the Glen, hosted by Ballymena Runners in Glenariff Forest Park, is the traditional start to a New Year of running.  The New Years Day event saw 417 runners being serenaded by a piper as they took on the steep climbs and descents of the scenic forest park.

The King and Queen of the Glen were Zak Hanna (Newcastle & District AC) who won for the fourth consecutive year in a time of 33.32 and Karen Wilton (Jog Lisburn Running Club) who finished in a time of 41.18.

Springwell RC were well represented at the race with Alex Brennan (2nd M45), Alister Jamison (3rd M45), Maurice Walker (3rd M50) and Adele Tomb (3rd F45) all achieving podium places in their respective age categories.

East Antrim Marathon Series

The East Antrim Marathon Series hosted events on New Years Eve and New Years Day.  The New Years Eve race was a straightforward marathon with 4 laps of the Station Road circuit in Carrickfergus and Springwell RC’s first lady of distance, Helena Dornan finished off 2019 in style as she won the lady’s race with a time of 3.58.02.

With very little time to recover Helena was back on New Year’s Day for the 6 hour challenge.  This event is simply how far can you run in 6 hours, but it also incorporates a marathon event which saw Helena start 2020 as she finished 2019 with another win, this time in a time of 4.08.  Springwell RC’s Chris Denton was also out on New Years Day and produced another fantastic marathon performance to win the men’s event in 3.03
